Background: Radiation oncology remains one of the most effective and commonly used treatment modalities for cancer patients, providing targeted radiation to destroy tumor cells. With the rapid advancement of technology, modern radiation techniques have become more precise, minimizing damage to healthy tissue while maximizing the dose to cancerous areas. This article reviews the latest technological advancements in radiation oncology, including image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in treatment planning and delivery.
Methods: A systematic review of recent studies published between 2019 and 2023 was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of advanced radiation technologies, such as IGRT, IMRT, and AI-driven techniques. Clinical trials and studies were included that focused on the use of these technologies across different cancer types, with outcomes such as tumor control, patient safety, and overall survival.
Results: Significant improvements were noted in tumor targeting, reduced treatment durations, and decreased side effects with the use of IGRT and IMRT. AI applications in radiation oncology, especially for treatment planning and optimization, have also shown great promise in improving precision and personalization in therapy.
Conclusion: The ongoing advancements in radiation oncology have revolutionized cancer treatment, enhancing both treatment efficacy and patient safety. These innovations, particularly in IGRT, IMRT, and AI integration, offer promising new directions in personalized cancer care, leading to improved clinical outcomes and better quality of life for patients.
